I groan over my weekday wake-up time of 7:30 am, but for a road trip, a dark and early start is worth it. Chris and I took the expressway to Miyazu City in northern Kyoto and wound our way along the coast, trekking narrow, cliff-top roads. This Hawaii girl felt at home with the salty air and expansive blue waters, impossible to enjoy in landlocked Miki.

天橋立 (Amanohashidate) is one of the famous three scenic sites in Japan. See Wikipedia or someone more knowledgeable than myself for the other two.
